Authors and Illustrators Tile Mural – Salem Hyde Elementary School

Foundation Grants
Back to projects

This project will allow the 5th graders to express their love of illustrative book art and engage in texts by their favorite authors. The mural will be comprised of 6″ x 6″ ceramic tiles which will be joined into a larger piece to be installed in the school library . Each student or group of students will choose an author or illustrator. They will research the author or illustrator’s history and artistic style. They will then design a tile that will interpret their chosen author or illustrator’s published work. Students will work with the Library Media Specialist to explore different books and choose the style that most appeals to them. This will allow students to revisit beloved picture books and express their appreciation for the artwork they enjoyed as younger students. . After the research has been completed, students will work with the art teacher to design and produce individual tiles. Students will be challenged to translate two-dimensional illustration into a three dimensional relief tile. The art teacher will teach students how to design tiles, both as an individual effort and a collective design for murals. Installation in the library will provide a display for all students to enjoy and perhaps spark an interest in a particular book, author, or illustrator.
