The “Greening of Porter” will involve students in PreK – 5 and teach them the importance of taking care of the world around them, beginning with the school community. In the beginning of the year students will read and learn about composting. Students will collect the raw garbage from their breakfast and snacks in the classroom compost container, once daily students will make a trip outside to the outside compost container to empty out the classroom container. From this daily practice students will come to understand the cycle of garbage and a cleaner/greener way of throwing away much of our trash. In March of every year, the school district participates in Read Across America. Porter classrooms will share in a book with an environmental theme like The Lorax, the book we read together last year. As a school community we will focus on lessons that depict the delicate balance of our environment, plant vegetable seeds for the Porter Garden, and decorate classroom doors with recycled and reused materials. During our May Family engagement night, Spring Bling, our students will teach their parents about what they learned about plants and planting. We will all work together to construct an additional, larger community raised bed. Students will continue to care for the gardens for the remainder of the school year, responsibility will than transfer to summer school students for the summer.
